The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from April until October. You can walk around the lake to the hut but we found a log to have a snack and continued 1.2 miles on Lonesome lake trail to Lafayette campground (easy 35 min). That part took 45 min.
