I used an eBay sourced optical drive sensor (transistor type) from a different iMac and taped it to my new hard disk. In either case the cost of repair was higher than fixing the system correctly the first time.BTW I'm a beta tester for a major hard drive manufacturer and their replacement 2.5" 'Fusion' drive is in beta right now and is performing about midway between spinning HDD and SSD in terms of read/write tests. .
