Use a damp cloth to wipe off any excess glue quickly. I KNEW someone would have investigated and repaired a purse. The needle should be sharp and small enough to fit easily through the holes and the thread should be similar to that used in the rest of the bag.Retrace your steps. To make a knot, pass your needle through the thread of the stitch you just made -- just the thread, not the hole in the leather -- and pull your thread until there is just a small loop. The tips of leather point needles are shaped like triangles to allow the needle to push through the leather without tearing it. Any thoughts? Thank goodness your article came up first when I googled how to fix your frayed purse strap! I have been back to a ‘cheapy’ all year but am excited to try and fix my beautiful guess bag ($160 here). BUUUUT, they’ll give you a gift card for the value of your bag today, which is typically around $20 less than what you originally paid for it. Flatten the leather, pressing the edges of the crack together. You would think more people would want to conserve (maybe they just throw theirs worn out bag away). It looks a mess, and is a shame for what it is worth. This tutorial was exactly what I was looking for to fix my Michael Kors Jet Set that I have been using non-stop.

I call it my Coach recycling program. The friction of a shoulder or hand rubbing on your bag's strap often causes the stitching to wear and the layers of leather to separate. This is enough to repair most cracks, but they may still be easy to spot. Filler is colorless, so it does a better job of permanently hiding bad cracks. Good deal, but I really love this bag.

This is really a great post. Thought about stapling it, but can’t find a stapler big enough!! And where do you find the glue you used? Yay, diy repairs!Thank you for your post. Its just the fraying and splitting on the edges and I was so sad that I just keep carrying it like this. Thankfully, you can fix any separated leather item. Great blog!! Pass your needle through the loop two to three times and pull it down tight to form the knot. Lo and behold, you provided an entire tutorial.

I can’t wait to fix it. While the look of leather watch straps can be restored, keep in mind that the damage caused by years of wear may compromise the band’s strength. But if you’ve found yourself in the possession of a cracked or cracking leather bag, you’ll need to decide if you want to replace it or repair it. I’ve even managed to make money off of a bag I sent back for repairs (because I bought it with a 30% off coupon). One of the straps broke at the ring, can I fix?I hope it works out great on your bag! So helpful!Hi! Allow the repair to dry. [not new] Tried gluing it, but it got too messy so I’m using another bag I don’t like. !Again thank you for this great post!Do you think that the clear would work well on a colored leather?I thought this difference was phenomenal for $10, and am SOO glad that I attempted it!

Was ready to put send it to Goodwill. I am so glad that I don’t have to get rid of it. Bring your needle down into the next hole, through both layers, then up through the next hole. Remove all loose thread. Thank you! Repeat until you have inserted the needle into the first "good" stitch on the other side of the worn area.

Thank you so much!Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information. I wanted to fix my bag myself, but I only made it worse. I want to reuse that bag!! Thanks! They look terrible, but the rest of the purse is in perfect condition. I wanted to add that I sent this in to Coach and they could not repair it, so they sent it back to me with a letter giving me 40% off a regular priced item. it was a leather bag and i loved it..carried it for about a month then the edging started peeling off….i returned the bag but i was sick over it….then i noticed alot of others were complaining about the same thing….so QVC took 100.00 off the price…so i decided to buy it back and fix it myself……thanks to u i was able to do that!

I was so disappointed when after about a year, the straps started to fall apart.
