"Kodachrome" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. His mind is the camera that colors his memories. In 1973, he released the song, Kodachrome, which depending on who you ask, may be open to interpretation. Simon sings about his Nikon camera and his color film, being Kodachrome (Kodak Company) but in my humble opinion, it seems to be somewhat of a coming of age song. Following the split, Paul Simon went on to forge a very creditworthy solo career. The narrator of the song, who was a poor to middling high school student, has now found himself addicted to his Playboy magazines, and in the last stanza he imagines “all the girls I knew”, or all the Playboy centerfolds, in one big sexual (and highly unlikely) fantasy orgy. for paul simon i like him a lot since back in the day. i think his kodachrome is his vision of what he wants his future to be. On the surface a very happy song, but seen from the perspective of a young GI in country (most were poor, recent high school graduates, or dropouts) it tells the saddest story possible. He had no idea what it meant, but knew it would make for a much more interesting song than "Coming Home." Photographs are dull and two dimensional- they may as well all be black and white, thereby making the invention unnecessary. It was the lead single from his third studio album, There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973), released on Columbia Records. maybe its just that its pretty clear what the meaning is, I guess.
